Crested porcupines (*Hystrix cristata*) are large rodents native to North and Sub-Saharan Africa, with some populations in southern Europe. They are mostly terrestrial and inhabit forests, grasslands, and rocky areas.
Crested porcupines are notable for their long, sharp quills that cover their back and tail. Adults can weigh 20–35 pounds and reach lengths of 25–36 inches (plus quills). Lifespan in captivity is approximately 10–15 years. They are nocturnal and primarily herbivorous, although they may gnaw on bones for minerals.
Crested porcupines are generally calm but can be defensive if threatened, using their quills as a deterrent. They are intelligent, solitary, and primarily active at night. Interaction with humans should be gentle and cautious due to their quills.
A high-fiber diet is essential for proper digestion and dental health.
Crested porcupines are solitary by nature. Housing multiple individuals together is not recommended except for mating pairs, and even then careful monitoring is required.
Handling should be limited due to sharp quills. Approach calmly and avoid sudden movements. Use thick gloves or barriers when necessary. Interaction is mostly observational and through safe methods.
Common health concerns:
Signs of illness: Lethargy, poor appetite, weight loss, discharge from eyes or nose, or abnormal behavior. Seek care from an exotic animal veterinarian.
Crested porcupines naturally maintain their quills. Provide dust baths or shallow sand areas for hygiene if appropriate. Regular checks of quills for damage or parasites are recommended.
